Describe your school's strengths and needs based on a school improvement document, such as the school's SALT visit report, its SALT survey data, or its school improvement plan.
MISSION
Our mission is to educate our students to become intellectually active adults, to inspire them to reach individual excellence, and to challenge them to become responsible members of society.
CORE VALUES
1.Foster and strengthen an educational environment based on trust, decency, courtesy, and mutual respect through work with families, students, school personnel, and elected officials.
2.Support all employees in their efforts to improve teaching and learning.
3.Instill in students a strong work ethic so they learn the value of preparation, timeliness, and the importance of being involved in their community.
4.Adhere to sound fiscal management, responsible planning, and an equitable use of all resources.
GOALS Goal #1:Student Achievement
To achieve 75% proficiency (in all subgroups) within two years, 85% proficiency within three years, and 90% within four years by reducing the number of “partially proficient” and “substantially below proficient” students to less than 10% within four years. Measure: NECAP test results. Goal #2:The Whole Child
To implement and support students’ social and emotional wellness and fitness through:
Extra-curricular activities/Athletics Holistic in-school support system Ongoing wellness program focused on promoting healthy/active lifestyles Measures: Attendance rates, activity participation rates as % of population, reduction in substance abuse rates, bullying incidents, and obesity rate. Goal #3:Fiscal Responsibility
To maintain a fiscally responsible and financially stable operating budget that reflects sound business practices, creativity and innovation, and supports a world-class education. Measure: Student performance relative to per pupil spending
I believe one of the major strengths of my placement school is that it focuses on a positive and creative environment where students are able to take chances and learn without fear of being "shot down." Along with this positive environment NKHS also wants to strengthen students work ethics in order to make them contributing members of the community. Giving students the materials to learn is just half the battle. Here at NKHS faculty doesn't just give students materials and let them do it on their own, instead they take it a step further and guide their learning to give them the best understanding possible. Another very big strength here at NKHS is that they are not only dedicated to making their students feel comfortable but their teachers as well! They provide them with opportunities to better themselves as teachers (workshops, new references, etc.) as well as faculty breakfasts and lunches. After all, a school is not fully functional without "happy" and "healthy" teachers.
Their are 3 main goals in which NKHS would like to better itself. Those goals include proficiency increases in all subgroups of the NECAP test, supporting students ' social and emotional wellness, and maintaining a responsible and financially stable budget. Seen above are the goals and ways that NKHS aims to improve them. What I think is very important that they have included are the ways they are going to MEASURE if they have reached their goals or not. Its one thing to just say that NKHS has goals, but once again they have taken it a step further in order to better themselves for the greater good of the school. The final goal involves the budget. I think it is a great idea to involve goals that are not just education related. This way, you can better your school has a whole, rather than just a section at a time. These goals are very realistic and you can see that by the timeline that is given to accomplish them. NKHS is not being unreasonable with giving themselves 2 or 3 years to accomplish what they want to do. On the contrary, I believe it would be unreasonable to think that one high school, or middle/elementary school for that matter could accomplish all that they want to within one year.
